Infinite Possibilities – Bioshock: Inifinite draws closer, but still no release date

The story of Icarus is a simple one. A man and his son are escaping from an insland with wings made from glue and feathers. The father warns Icarus, his son, not to fly too close to the sun, but the son disobeys him, flying far from his father, where his wings melt and he plummets into the sea.

Project Icarus was what the new game by Irrational Games, BioShock Infinite, was originally called in its earlier stages. And its story could easily be one of Icarus falling into the sea when he (of course, the new BioShock game) strays to far from his father (the original BioShock). The story takes us far from the world of Rapture and Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine, but rather sends us into the heavens to Columbia, in 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, an agent sent to investigate the flying city that has floated away from its creators.

A time when George Lucas hadn't started changing Star Wars...

As you can see, the visual effects of BioShock Infinite will hopefully be as good as the first two games were, and the gameplay just as innovative. However, some major changes have been made to the way the game will be played. One big one is the removal of EVE, the magical substance that granted the player the ability to use Plasmids. Instead, vials of vigor will increase the uses of the Players Plasmids, which will also not be interchangable. Rather, they will be a permenant choice, so choose well. Finally, the addition of the Skyline, a rail based system through Columbia, means that transport around the city will be easier then walking on thin air.

According to Irrational Game’s creative director Ken Levine, your companion in the game, pictured above, named Elizabeth, will co-operate with you using an A.I. unit similar to the A.I. Director from the Left 4 Dead games.

The other good news that comes from Irrational Games is the statement by Levine annoucing that Infinite would be designed primarily with Play Station 3 in mind. The PS3 gamers originally had to wait until BioShock became a port for their system, as the release only came out on Xbox 360 and PC.

“Look, I’m not blowing smoke here,” Levine said. “We were Xbox-first for the original game, and now we have something to demonstrate to the PlayStation 3 audience.” He added that he personally was a big fan of the PS3.

Levine also wanted to make it clear that BioShock: Infinite isn’t BioShock 3.

“We never thought of it as BioShock 3, as a follow-on to BioShock 2, but at the same time it is totally a BioShock game. We look at BioShock games differently, as the guys who created it. Here’s why we believe this is a BioShock game: it’s set in a world that’s ridiculous and fantastical and over the top, but still connected to the human experience very much. It feels like it could be a real place. The second thing is that you have this suite of powers so that you drive how you play the game, as much as you can.”

I, personally, just want to return to the world of Andrew Ryan, Little Sisters, raging Bouncers, dancing Houdini Splicers and “Frank Fontaine’s Fiery Shootout!” but I guess I’ll have to just get the first game out again and see if I can run through it on Hard.

BioShock Infinite comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2012.

(And hello as well, I’m going to be helping Sam here with the latest News and such from now on. And this is kind of an article review thing, I’ll probably do these as well as the news.)
